The following country guides represent Signal Atlas's independent research into travel connectivity conditions across Europe. Each guide covers connectivity expectations, travel planning considerations, border crossing factors, and mobile data considerations for travelers.
Germany has one of Europe's most developed mobile network infrastructures, with three major national operators providing extensive 4G coverage and rapidly expanding 5G networks in urban areas. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Frankfurt are well-served by all major networks, with strong indoor coverage in transit hubs and commercial areas.
Rural connectivity has historically been a challenge in Germany, with coverage gaps in agricultural regions and forested areas. The German government has mandated coverage improvements, and the situation has improved significantly since 2022, though travelers venturing off major routes should maintain realistic expectations.
France offers strong mobile connectivity in Paris and major regional cities, with four national operators providing competitive coverage. The country's extensive high-speed rail network is generally well-served by mobile data, making train travel a productive option for connected travelers.
Rural France — the Massif Central, Brittany's interior, and parts of the Pyrenees — presents coverage challenges that travelers should anticipate. The French government's New Deal for Mobile program has driven significant rural coverage improvements, but gaps remain in the most remote areas.
Spain has invested heavily in mobile infrastructure, with Madrid and Barcelona among Europe's best-connected cities. The country's tourism-driven economy has incentivized strong connectivity in coastal resorts, major tourist destinations, and transportation hubs.
The Spanish interior and rural regions of Castile, Extremadura, and parts of Andalusia have more variable coverage. The Canary and Balearic Islands are well-served in resort areas but may have gaps in interior and less-developed zones.
Italy's mobile landscape is characterized by strong urban coverage in Rome, Milan, Florence, and Venice, with competitive pricing from multiple national operators. The country's historic city centers present some indoor coverage challenges due to thick stone construction, but outdoor coverage is generally reliable.
Southern Italy and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia have seen significant coverage improvements but still lag behind northern regions. Mountain areas in the Alps and Apennines have predictably limited coverage.
The Netherlands consistently ranks among Europe's top countries for mobile network quality. Its compact geography and high population density have enabled near-universal 4G coverage, with 5G deployment advancing rapidly. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht are exceptionally well-connected.
Even rural areas of the Netherlands benefit from strong coverage due to the country's flat terrain and dense network infrastructure. The Wadden Islands are the primary exception, with more limited connectivity in remote areas.
Belgium offers strong connectivity in Brussels, Antwerp, and Ghent. As the seat of EU institutions, Brussels has particularly robust infrastructure. The Ardennes region has more variable coverage but has improved significantly in recent years.
Austria's alpine geography creates coverage challenges in mountain valleys and ski resorts. Vienna and Salzburg are excellently served. Major ski destinations have improved connectivity, but remote hiking areas should be approached with backup plans.
Prague has excellent connectivity and is well-covered by eSIM providers. Rural Bohemia and Moravia have improved but remain variable. The Czech Republic is not in the Eurozone but is in the EU, so standard EU roaming rules apply.
Poland has invested heavily in network infrastructure, with Warsaw, Kraków, and Wrocław offering strong 4G and emerging 5G coverage. Eastern Poland near the Belarus and Ukraine borders has more variable connectivity.
Portugal offers strong connectivity in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve coast. The country's digital nomad visa program has driven infrastructure investment in remote work hubs. Interior Alentejo and Trás-os-Montes have more limited coverage. The Azores and Madeira are served but with higher latency due to their Atlantic location.
